A few months ago, Legendary and Capcom’s Street Fighter movie hit a big bump in the road when Talk To Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou left the project over scheduling issues. But, it sounds like they have found a new filmmaker to take on the challenge.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) has now signed on to direct the film. This is an interesting choice, as Bad Trip was a mix of a scripted buddy comedy and a real hidden camera prank show.
It followed the outrageous misadventures of two buds stuck in a rut who embark on a cross-country road trip to NYC.
The movie wasn’t really anything special but it offered a few laughs. He also directed a few episodes of Peacock’s Twisted Metal series.
I’m not convinced that this is the guy that is going to deliver a great Street Fighter movie, but maybe he will surprise fans and direct something awesome.
It's a shame that the Philippou brothers stepped away from the project, as they sounded very enthusiastic about the movie during a previous interview, saying:
"I think it's awesome that we have such a connection with the game and to the characters, and there's not like a pre-established big movie franchise where we have to fall in line [with] an overall plot.
“I think that we'd have the freedom to create what that overall arc could be if it was gonna be a bunch of films. And also, we'd love the chance to do an action film.
“We'd love the chance to do big set pieces of a big budget because even on our YouTube stuff, we're designing stunt rigs that had never been done before, and to do that on a grand scale, man, I feel like we could create something no one's ever seen before."
Michael added, "And I think it's like, diving into the lore of Street Fighter, all the characters, where they come from has been so exciting. You just get endless ideas, so putting them to the screen, yeah, I think we can make something special."
What are your thoughts on Kitao Sakurai being the possible new director of Street Fighter?
